This artist-curated exhibition showcases the work of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s ArtLife participants through a cyclic exhibition of their work. Each fortnight during this two month long exhibition, a different artist-curator will respond to the work of the previous show – revealing a new incarnation of what has been and what is to come.
Join us for the Opening and then over the duration of the exhibition, watch the work evolve. Learn more about the artists and their work in a conversation at our Closing Event.

Koorie women nurtured children and families with resistance, resilience and strength through suffering and loss to create something new. Government rations of flour, sugar and tea took on significance as core food sources to supplement the survival of Koorie people through the mission days.
Set within the “bushhhhh” – see, feel and smell flour, sugar, tea and remember a place, not that long ago, where survival meant making do with what you had. Flour, sugar and tea remain with Koories today, in memories, stories and recipes.

The ultimate in African roots-based music, Mandinka Sound brings you two extraordinarily talented Melbourne based West African acts, Muhanamwé and One Africa.

One Africa features two of Melbourne’s most celebrated West African performers, King Marong and Lamine Sonko. A subtle fusion of traditional West African culture and contemporary Australian influences, One Africa creates a hypnotically soulful repertoire of original songs.

Muhanamwé (meaning culture) has emerged from the dense and vibrant undergrowth of Melbourne’s world music scene as one of the freshest and most exciting West African percussion and dance ensembles. Muhanamwé not only draws from its deep roots in West Africa, but also updates and brings new life to an ancient musical and cultural tradition.

The Very West offers local unsigned artists the opportunity to strut their stuff at a special showcase event on Monday 14 December at The Toff in Town.

A panel of music industry representatives will judge the showcase, giving feedback to all of the performers.
