We acknowledge that we are on traditional lands of the Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation. We offer our respect to the Elders of these traditional lands and, through them, to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Following the success of the two previous events in 2007 and 2008, Footscray Community Arts Centre is once again collaborating with Federation Square on the Light in Winter Festival in 2009.
The Light in Winter explores the cultural meaning of light with thirteen different communities. Some of Melbourne’s most innovative artists will work with each community to create a light inspired artwork to warm the heart of the City in the chillier winter season. As part of the Gift of Light, on June 20, the longest night of winter, these light installations will be ‘switched on’ at 5pm. Then audiences are invited to roam around Federation Square taking in the sights and sounds of a range of different cultures.
Communities returning to the event this year will be Indigenous, Afghan, Japanese, Vietnamese, Turkish, Tuvalu and Kiribati, African, Hispanic and Indian. Communities welcomed for the first time in 2009 are Burmese, Greek, Italian and the Centre for Multicultural Youth.
Footscray Community Arts Centre is please to be coordinating and supporting community engagement in the Gift of Light project.
