Learn with no strings attached

The Footscray Arts Winter Workshops Program is in full swing but those wanting to join in the fun don’t have to wait until the new terms starts to get learning. With many classes offering $15 casual workshop sessions, budding artists can dip their toes in the creative waters without having to commit to a whole series of classes. Even better, the range of casual classes offered means creative types can give music, dance or visual art a go.

Here are some details of what you can try.

Chunky Dance held on Tuesday evening 6.30-8pm is a workshop designed especially for those adults who think they can’t dance. Led by dancers and choreographers from Australia’s leading contemporary dance company Chunky Move, this is one fun and funky dance class.

Beginning to Draw held on Tuesday evening 6.30-8.30pm is a workshop designed to unleash the artist within all willing participants. No experience is necessary for this observational drawing workshop – just a passion for creativity.

Voice held on Thursday evening 6.30-8pm is a workshop where adults can find their inner voice. Discover the joy of group harmony and develop skills in community choral singing with renowned vocal practitioner John Howard.

Stencil Art held on Tuesday 4.30-6pm is visual arts class for 11–15-year-olds with street artist Yasemin Sabuncu where youngsters can drop in, grab a spray can and learn how to make impressive stencil art works.

Music for Toddlers held on a Wednesday at either 10–10.45am or 10.45–11.30am is a Creative Kids workshop designed for parents and their 1- to 3-year-old child. Musician and performer with The Mighty BuZZniks, Razz Mussen, leads an all singing, dancing, listening and percussion jam that is a hoot for both kids and parents alike.

NICA Circus Skills held on a Wednesday 4-5pm (Age: 5–7years) and 5-6pm(Age:8–11 years) is a Creative Kids workshop where circus performers from the National Institute of Circus Arts teach exciting circus basics such as acrobatics, juggling, tumbling, hula-hoops, diabolo and acro-balance.

Hip-Hop Dance held on a Saturday 11am-12noon (Age: 11–15 years) and 12noon-1pm(Age:7–10 years) is a Performance Arts workshop where Jason Lejcak from Melbourne hip-hop crew Burn Troops teaches the art of hip-hop dance from poppin’ and lockin’ to up-rock and breaking.
