Place Art Here Artists Brief 2009
Place Art Here Online Resource
This year Footscray Community Arts Centre and the Victorian Department of Transport are offering you the chance to be involved in an innovative public art project being created in and around Footscray Train Station.
Place Art Here will be focussed around the journeys taken everyday by commuters to, from and through one of Melbourne’s busiest stations, Footscray. This exciting project explores the unique experience commuters have when they enter the communal space of travel, and the connections felt with fellow commuters and with the places passed through in life’s daily journeys.
Place Art Here forms part of the Victorian State Government’s planning and urban design framework for central Footscray, called Footscray Renewal. This initiative aims to improve and revitalise all aspects of life in the urban centre of Footscray. Place Art Here will see the creation of a major public artwork celebrating the life and culture of this area and ultimately contributing to its vibrancy (through the work’s creation) and aesthetic (with the final product).
This new artwork will be created in consultation with Footscray Train Station commuters and local community members, for everyone who lives, work or passes through Footscray to enjoy. It’s designed to be a celebration of the many great things about the Footscray area, an area which has been described by those who know the place as artsy, edgy, diverse and multicultural. Now Footscray Arts is looking for people to get involved.
As part of the first stage of Place Art Here we’ll be out and about gathering feedback and contributions from local residents and commuters through a series of onsite ‘art interventions’, discussions and presentations. The information gathered through this process will then be used to develop a tender to find the most appropriate artist to engage with the community in the creation of this major artwork.
Footscray Community Arts Centre staff will be out and about at Footscray Train Station throughout June and July interviewing commuters and train station users about what is important to them, what they think about public art and what they would like to see created and installed as part of the new precinct’s plaza areas.
As part of this public consultation, we are asking you to fill out a brief survey that will help us gather a little information about who you are and what is most important to you. We will then use this information to help inform the final artwork. Your assistance is vital to ensure the new public art work is created with what means most our the local community in mind.
