Footscray Arts Workshops on Show

Each year Footscray Community Arts Centre offers a series of arts-based classes and workshops for people of all skill levels. From Friday 3 November six huge events are set to showcase what the class of 2006 has been up to. You may be aware of the fabulous year round programming at Footscray Community Arts Centre, but these showcase events put the spotlight on another important aspect of the centre’s work – our workshops.

As Workshops Coordinator, Bernadette Fitzgerald explains “We’re very proud of the work produced in our Workshops Program. For some of the participants, this is an initial step into the world of art, and for others it’s about having new experiences. These presentations are an acknowledgement of their achievements and the extraordinary passion and generosity of the tutors.”

Event 1: after space between time (Exhibition)

As part of a long-standing partnership between Victoria University and Footscray Arts honouring the educational value of creativity and community involvement in the arts, students have undertaken their Text and Culture 1 unit at Footscray Community Arts Centre. After space and time features their personal creative responses to social ideas through a range of works, including mixed media, montage, painting and drawing, film and photography.  The exhibition is curated by one of the course tutors, artist Robert Mangion.

Friday 3 – Friday 10 November [not Mondays]

Event 2: recognition (Exhibition)
Curated by visual artist and tutor Darien Pullen, recognition features works in a range of mediums from the Footscray Arts Painting & Drawing and Life Drawing students. The exhibition deals with the identification of the fundamental properties of an object as it is perceived and described.

Friday 24 November- Sunday 3 December [not Mondays]

Event 3: reverberate (one-night-only performance of work from two workshop courses)

Integrate Stretch is a unique course in theatre, audio and movement for people with disabilities. As part of reverberate these students will give a presentation merging storytelling with physical theatre and sound. The Media Technology students have been studying audio engineering and music technology. In the second part of the program they will present a performance of original audio texts developed during the year.

Friday 3 November at 7.30pm

Event 4: formative (Exhibitions and Performances)

Bring a picnic and come and check out what the kids been up to. In the galleries Animate, the comic and animate workshop, shows off its creations and Children’s Art gives art lovers a glimpse of the talents of the future. Footscray Flyers kid’s circus program will thrill audiences with their skills and the kids from Hip Hop Move and Beats will have everyone grooving.

Sunday 12 November from 2pm – 5pm

Event 5: rolling around the sun (Exhibition)

ArtLife is a program for people with disabilities to develop both artistic skills and life skills.
This year the ArtLife participants have been working with the theme of ‘seasons’ and the results can be seen in rolling around the sun. This exhibition of 2D and 3D work, including painting, drawing, ceramic and mosaic, has been curated by one of the course tutors, artist Simeon Pritchard.

Tuesday 28 November – Friday 8 December [not Mondays]

Event 6: 4 seasons (Performance)

The ArtLife participants’ exploration of seasons continues with a performance of improvised new music by the music students followed by a madcap half hour performance. ArtLife computer students will be responsible for production of a program of events and the evening will rock to a close with a performance by The Hackketts bringing their own interpretations to some old favourites and original songs.
