Workshop Intensives
Get Creative at a Workshop Intensive
If you have a passion for drawing or a talent for music why not sharpen up your skills at one of our upcoming Workshop Intensives.
On Sunday 19 August bring along your trusty ukulele and learn some of the finer points of writing and performing musical comedy with ukulele musical comedienne Shirley Billing. Shirley’s creative work is informed by the familiar and the bizarre, and integrates original songs with wry and quirky narrative. She has written songs for Circus Oz and is a renowned cabaret artist and emcee. Learn some great ukulele techniques. Move with awesomely slick footwork. Have a bash at some comedy! Wow your family and friends with your hot ukulele act. To take part in this workshop it is essential to have a ukulele and to be able to play at least three chords.
On Sunday 26 August join Arlene TextaQueen for a life drawing class with a difference. Create your own work of art with a felt tip marker. This workshop offers four hours of model time, with model poses to be negotiated with the participants.
Arlene TextaQueen graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Western Australia in 1995 and subsequently re-discovered her childhood devotion to her felt-tip marker. In the past decade she has been re-con-texta-ualising the traditional salon nude with wide exposure including drawing, digital animation, performance and print. This workshop is for the intermediate to more advanced.
Kids can also try their hands at a texta portrait in a special workshop class on Sunday 2 September – that’s Father’s Day. Bring along your Dad, Grandfather or another very special person to model as you develop a felt tip marker portrait under the guidance of Arlene TextaQueen. At the end of the workshop get your portrait laminated as a gift.
Young female songwriters are encouraged to take part in a weekend song writing workshop with Melbourne music icon Rebecca Barnard on September 22 and 23. Hailing from a family rich in musical history, Rebecca Barnard has recorded and toured with almost anyone you can think of, from Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers, Renee Geyer and Deborah Conway, to the Meanies and Warped. Now young musicians have the unique opportunity to learn some of the tricks of the song writing trade over the course of a weekend. To take part in this workshop partipants must be able to play a musical instrument with musicians ranging from beginner to advanced all welcome.
Also coming up we have a very special workshop intensive for young female performers as hip-hop queens and rap music theatre artists Sista She lead an intensive MC’ing workshop on Sunday 7 October. Candy Bowers (Rasheda EDA MC) and Sarah Ward (Sheila MC EILA) have trained and worked in the entertainment industry for over 5 years. They have performed on stage and screen as actors, singers, comedians and hip- hop artists, first stepping on stage as Sista She in 2002. Since then this dynamic duo has performed all over the country, including seasons at Sydney Opera House, Brisbane Powerhouse, Albury Hothouse Theatre, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. They have played music sets at The Big Day Out, Sydney Festival’s Becks Bar, Federation Square and for International Women’s Day in Adelaide to name a few. Now they are set to pass on the sista philosophy in rhyme at this day long workshop.
