Footscray Community Arts Centre present

Winter Music Series

This August ward off those winter blues with a weekly dose of experimental sounds from around the globe as part of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Winter Music Series.

Way Out West

First up, on Sunday 10 August, join us to welcome home local band Way Out West, fresh back from touring overseas.

Where else but Footscray would you be likely to find a band featuring a Sri Lankan born West African percussion master and a Vietnamese traditional musician who also carves up the jazz guitar, mixing it with players diversely experienced in western pop, jazz, and classical traditions? Footscray is just such a melting pot and Way Out West is just such a band.

Drawing inspiration from the cultural vitality and diversity of Footscray, Way Out West combines Vietnamese, African and jazz influences to create a groovy sound utterly unlike anything else you’ve ever heard.

Don’t miss the distinctive and alluring music that is guaranteed to flow from Peter Knight (trumpet), Paul Williamson (saxophone), Dung Nguyen (modified electric guitar, dan tranh, dan bau), Ray Periera (percussion), Howard Cairns (acoustic bass) and Dave Beck (drums).

Über Lingua

On Sunday 17 August get set for an afternoon of musical diversity and cutting-edge sounds as the crew from Über Lingua take to the stage.

Since its birth in 2004, Über Lingua has become something of a cultural movement in Australia's underground music scene. These global party maestros host huge music events featuring local artists as well as DJs and musicians from countries such as Kenya, Japan, Spain, France and Brazil.

The group’s brief is to promote multi-linguality and musical diversity and they are sure to heat up the Pit Theatre dance floor with urban beats and body pumping grooves from around the globe. Expect the unexpected as the crew spin anything from obscure Asian hip-hop oddities through to Latin, Basque and African music, European gypsy sounds or even Brazilian samba-rock. Any number of genres and styles from around the world will be pulsing from the PA at this unmissable music event.

Airi Ingram is a producer, percussionist, drummer and composer who has been the leader of drum drum since its inception in 1993. drum drum is undoubtedly one of the most innovative contemporary groups in the South Pacific and features dancers and classically trained musicians from Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Australia.

Pateras & Fox

The final concert in our Winter Music Series features the explosive collaborative duo Pateras & Fox performing on Sunday 31 August.

Formed in 2000, Pateras & Fox (Anthony Pateras and Robin Fox) execute an electrified real-time homage to some of their favorite obsessions – breakneck pacing, vocal hysterics and blistering textures. Where possible, the duo plays in multi-channel configurations, creating a visceral battlefield of hyperactive audio in surround. Often they open their collaborative shows with highlights from their respective solo arsenals of prepared piano and laser.

Pateras & Fox have performed countless concerts throughout Australia, Europe, USA and Japan, and have also recorded two acclaimed full-length releases. Don’t miss them live in an electro-acoustic extravaganza to remember.
