[click thru text] In September 2006, Footscray Arts launched its Art Lending Library with an exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of Marios café in Brunswick Street. A selection of works by artists who had shown at Marios over the last 20 years was put together and became the inaugural collection for the Footscray Arts lending library. One half of the collection was shown here at Footscray Community Arts Centre, with another selection of works on display at Marios. Now the entire Marios Collection can be seen at The Gabriel Gallery at Footscray Community Arts Centre from 2 March.
Inspired by a model used by the Dutch government, we conceived the Art Lending Library because we believe that art belongs everywhere – not just at our home, but yours too. As part of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s vision to change lives with art, we’re encouraging you to develop an interest in contemporary visual art and the Art Lending Library is designed to make that happen. In 2008 community members will be able to access the Art Lending Library and borrow works for exhibiting in their homes or organisations. Footscray Arts will provide curatorial support, art notes, assistance in hanging the works and support for any events such as exhibition launches. Between now and then we’ll be building up our library collection, but for now why not check out the incredible range of works in The Marios Collection and register your interest in having your favourite on display in your home.
