The Art Unit
Throughout 2007 Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Artists in Residence Ben Cobham and Andrew Livingston of Bluebottle 3 have been designing and developing The Art Unit, a portable structure made from cardboard, plywood, plastic and recycled goods. The Art Unit is set to become a unique site and space for artists, community members and others to meet, create and discuss ideas.
The Art Unit project explores how communities can create, inhabit and share spaces. At Footscray Community Arts Centre we are well aware that communities strongly value having access to physical spaces to stage activities and to more broadly demonstrate and promote their presence. This project explores and responds to this need, doing so by utilising a ‘DIY ethic’ to encourage practical and sustainable methods of creating space. The Art Unit has a basic framework and method of construction, but is adaptable to a variety of forms and functions. Ben and Andrew see their creation as a community-built public space that can be used for a variety of artistic outcomes including performances, exhibitions, and other events.
The Art Unit: Wee
Do you like your theatre short and sweet? Then Wee could be just the thing for you. From Wednesday 26 – Friday 28 March we’re bringing a short season of short theatre works to The Art Unit. These surprising, small and unique works have all been created by local artists especially to be seen in our portable art and performing space.
The exciting and intriguing Wee program consists of five minute-long multimedia works all focussing on the intimacy of performing in a small space to a very small audience. If you’re interested in some rapid fire, eclectic theatre, then we suggest you don’t miss Wee.

The Art Unit: 30 Minutes Of Your Own
Ever needed just 30 minutes to think something through, come up with that new idea or simply spend some time by yourself? The Art Unit: 30 Minutes Of Your Own will provide just that. On select days each week from November through to the end of March, The Art Unit will be available for you to book as your own private space to think, dream, act and create.
It’s your time, your space - so make of it what you will!
