Experience sitar as never before in a breathtaking concert from sitar master Khalil Gudaz

Master Khalil Gudaz

After the success of his performance last year, Khalil Gudaz returns to Footscray Community Arts Centre with a new two-part concert to musically transport audiences to India, Afghanistan and beyond.

In the first part of the concert the award-winning Master Gudaz will play and sing beautiful and spiritual Sufi music. Accompanied by tabla and tanpora, Gudaz introduces audiences to the mystical sounds and exquisite poetry of Sufism.

The second half of the concert features sitar music by Master Khalil Gudaz himself. His playing style and renditions of Hindustani music blend the character of the great north Indian raga traditions with subtle and lyrical melodic interpretations drawn from his Afghani heritage.

Recognised as one of the most outstanding practitioners of Hindustani and Afghani music in Australia today, the Afghan-born Khalil Gudaz trained from a young age on the rabab and tanboor, later taking up the sitar. He is a master of the demanding sitar style known as “Gayaki-Ang” (the singing style of sitar playing) and plays classical north Indian raga as well as popular and folk melodies from India and Afghanistan.

Khalil Gudaz is renowned internationally for his work in bringing together major disciplines of Afghani and Hindustani music. Since fleeing the Taliban and migrating to Australia in 1998, he has sought to bring the sitar to a wider audience and has performed to great acclaim at many major music festivals including Woodford, Womadelaide and even the Meredith Music Festival. He has won numerous awards both in Australia and overseas and recorded two tracks with John Butler for John Doyle’s ABC TV series Marking Time.

This one-off free concert by Khalil Gudaz at Footscray Community Arts Centre is a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of the sitar in the hands of a Master.
