School Holiday Program

School Holiday Program

For the first time this summer Footscray Arts is offering an exciting intensive School Holiday Program for 6 to 12 year-olds.

From Tuesday 23 – Thursday 25 January, youngsters can be part of the magic and mayhem in a range of classes taken by some of the best artists in Melbourne including Adam Simmons Toy Band trombonist Kynan Robinson, VJ Lindsay Cox, animator Isobel Knowles and visual artist Florence “Flossie” Peitsch as well as puppeteers and hip-hop tutors.

Creation is the theme of this exciting program, with kids being given the chance to create everything from original music and instruments to props, costumes and their own characters. There will also be cartoon, animation and VJing classes on offer. If the kids are inspired by this holiday program, there is also the chance to continue the fun with our ongoing workshops program, which takes place at Footscray Community Arts Centre throughout the year.

Kids are encouraged to take part in the full School Holiday Program experience which involves three action packed days of workshop fun. Lunch isn’t included in the program fee so feel free to bring your own along or pre-order a Happy River Lunch Box from the Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Happy River Café.

After the School Holiday Program classes are over everyone is invited back to Footscray Community Arts Centre on Friday 26 January to show off what they learned and made before a FREE performance by Adam Simmons Toy Band on Australia Day.

Adam Simmons Toy Band Performance on Australia Day

Celebrate Australia Day with a free concert at Footscray Community Arts Centre. See a Show and Tell from our School Holiday Program participants and experience a puppetry spectacular before listening to the weird and wonderful sounds of the Adam Simmons Toy Band.

Join us for a free performance by the Adam Simmons Toy Band – described by The Age as “the best musical party in town.” There's no telling what might happen when eight of Melbourne’s most inspired young jazz musicians and composers get together with four big suitcases of children's toys and toy instruments, as well as their own huge array of drums, bass and horns.

Before the musical fun starts, everyone will be treated to a Show and Tell by the kids who have taken part in our School Holiday Program [link]. There’ll also be a surprise visit from a magical collection of puppets including Aslan, Mr Tumnus, the Faun and Mr and Mrs Beaver from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe along with hobbits and trolls from The Hobbit and a beautiful optic fibre forest. Number 12, the company who brought The Hobbit and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to the Arts Centre, are behind this puppet spectacular (They’re also the company who are bringing the Walking with Dinosaurs- the Live Experience show to Australia.)

Come and join us for a BBQ and a great evening’s entertainment for the whole family.
