Federation Square in partnership with Footscray Community Arts Centre present
The Gift of Light – Winter Solstice Event
In 2007, Footscray Community Arts Centre collaborated with Federation Square in an initiative called The Gift of Light. As part of this sparkling new event, some of Melbourne’s most innovative artists and communities came together to create installations that explored the cultural meaning of light.
This year Federation Square has expanded the project and visitors to the Square will be able to experience The Gift of Light from 21 June to 5 July. The highlight of the project will be the Winter Solstice Event to be presented by Robyn Archer on Saturday 21 June. Federation Square will come alive with community-inspired light installations and performances from around the world.
Footscray Community Arts Centre has once again been a partner organisation in this unique cultural event, having facilitated community collaborations with artists. As part of this year’s project Vikki Couzens has worked with the Indigenous community, Jen Hector with the Afghan, Amanda King with the Vietnamese, Tim Webster with the African, Marc Pascal with the Japanese, Andy Mutton with the Latin American, Tamsin Sharp with the Tuvalu, Pip Shea with the Turkish and Carole Wilson with the Indian community, and the results promise to be visually stunning
Head to Federation Square on the night of the winter solstice to discover and celebrate the significance of light to different cultures across the globe.
The Gift of Light is the community component of The Light in Winter, a major initiative of Federation Square that includes an education program, a large-scale installation from international artist and film-maker Srinivas Krishna, and an over-arching lighting treatment of Federation Square by Melbourne-based company the Flaming Beacon.
