Free Workshop for Young Rappers
Footscray Community Arts Centre is seeking emerging and professional rappers to take part in a free masterclass presented by Footscray Arts and Melbourne International Arts Festival. Fifteen lucky musicians will have the chance to work with performer and festival guest Pitcho Womba Konga as part of Footscray Arts’ International Artists Residency program.
Last year US violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) led a community workshop for young musicians and a private intensive workshop at Footscray Community Arts Centre during the 2006 Melbourne International Arts Festival and both events were an enormous success. In October an exciting international artist will once again work with local talent providing a great opportunity for musicians to hone their skills. Pitcho Womba Konga was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and emigrated to Belgium at the age of seven. He discovered hip-hop in the 1980s and founded his own group, Onde de Choc, in 1994. With a group of friends, he created Funkdamtion, an artistic joint work that aims to promote the hip-hop culture in Belgium. A celebrated rapper, hip hop artist and producer, Pitcho Womba Kongo will take time out of his performance in the Melbourne International Arts Festival production Sizwe Banziis Dead, directed by Peter Brook, to conduct this very special free masterclass for emerging and professional rap artists.
