Philip Brophy

Philip Brophy

Join the Footscray Audio Visual Social Club (FAVCS) for a FREE presentation of some of the incredible creations of multigenre artist Philip Brophy.

After a series of experimental mixed-media works exhibited in art and non-art contexts over many years, Philip Brophy has consolidated his interests to produce a range of audiovisual works focusing on his key interests in pop, sex and music. These recent works include the Dolby 5.1 DVDs EVAPORATED MUSIC 2 (exhibited at Artspace, Sydney) and EVAPORATED MUSIC 1 (exhibited at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), and the 3-screen Dolby 5.1 installation FLUORESCENT commissioned for the Contemporary Art Projects at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and recently included in the 2006 Singapore Biennale.

As a writer and speaker on art, Philip Brophy specialises in three areas: audiovisual media and technology; comics, graphics and associated mass media; and Pop Art in its historical and contemporary forms. He is published in all three areas internationally. From these fields, his book projects in development include THE BODY HORRIBLE and COLOUR ME DEAD. His most recent major curatorial project is the retrospective on the manga of OSAMU TEZUKA for the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.

FAVSC is a Footscray Community Arts Centre project produced by Emile Zile and co-curated by Martyn Coutts, both Artists In Residence at the Centre. A fortnightly meeting place for media artists, noise makers, electronics boffins, installation artists, circuit benders, DIYers, video geeks, laptop musicians, curators and those with an interest in low/hi-fi new/old-media art, FAVSC is a new media laboratory program designed to encourage and build relationships with established and emerging new media artists.

The FAVSC gang is very excited to be presenting the work of Philip Brophy to Footscray Community Arts Centre audiences on Tuesday 15 May. Don’t miss your chance to get a glimpse.
