DIY BBQ

An Introduction to DIY and a Sneak Peek at The Art Unit

You’re invited to Footscray Community Arts Centre on Sunday 4 March for a free BBQ and information session on two of our upcoming projects –The Art Unit and DIY – Make Your Own Event.

As part of their 2007 artist residency with Footscray Arts, Ben Cobham and Andrew Livingston will actively share skills and experience learnt in over 15 years of theatre practice.
The Art Unit project is inspired by the value that communities place on having access to physical spaces to stage activities. It explores how communities can create, inhabit and share spaces and very much relies on community involvement.  The Art Unit is a portable building unit informed by the temporary nature of theatre and performance and the ongoing problem of finding a space in which to make it. Throughout their residency Ben and Andrew will work directly with and inspire others to create their own artistic endeavours and spaces.

On Sunday 4 March Footscray Community Arts Centre will present a sneak peek of The Art Unit and an information session on a new project – DIY – Make Your Own Event. Join us for a free BBQ lunch as the artists offer some insight into what The Art Unit is and how it will be created with the community and explain how you can get involved in DIY to create your very own event.

Do you want to organise a street party? We will provide an artist to work with the street party committee in developing an event with live performances by local musicians. Do you belong to an artist’s group? We can assist you to showcase and display your group’s artwork and wow your neighbourhood. DIY is a project about making your very own event happen. A partnership between Footscray Community Arts Centre and our local communities, DIY will link high-calibre artists with local community groups to assist them in developing and presenting their own events within their own neighbourhoods.

For the duration of Ben and Andrew's residency The Art Unitwill provide a unique site and space for artists, community members and others to meet and discuss ideas and it will be used to stage DIY events.

If you’re interested in becoming part of DIY and making your own event please contact David Everist on (03) 9362 8802 or email david@footscrayarts.com for details on submitting an expression of interest. In July and October this year we will link your group with an artist to support your group to create, develop and stage an event. In October the whole community will have the chance to see and enjoy the results of your DIY project.

Or just come along to our free BBQ to find out more.
