Not Enough Cows: An introduction to the process of getting married
The very first DIY event is set to be unveiled at Footscray Community Arts Centre on Friday 14 September.
In Sunshine in late July over 200 people from two Sudanese Dinka communities gathered to negotiate a complex traditional marriage ritual. The successful negotiation took over six hours and the results were videoed and communicated directly back to Sudan via mobile phones. With 130 cows having been exchanged the marriage can take place.
Highly respected and experienced Melbourne director David Pledger has been working with the Dambai Dancing group to present a theatrical version of the first part of the process. Experience songs, dances, speeches, comedy and ritual at this DIY event exploring the importance of weddings and cows to Sudanese culture.
