Combat Wombat with Low Def
Saturday 14 April is hip-hop time at Footscray Community Arts Centre. Join us as two very different sets of artists take to the stage for one huge FREE event.
Combat Wombat are an outspoken troupe of hip hop punks mainly located in Melbourne. They create music that reflects the frontline activism for which they have become famous and have just released their second album “Unsound System”.
At Combat Wombat's core is the Lab Rats Solar Sound System, which was formed at the Jabiluka uranium mine protests in 1998. Monkey Marc and MC Izzy are Australian pioneers of vegetable oil conversions for diesel engines (which will also fuel their upcoming national tour). Their fully equipped mobile studio runs off the solar panels on the van's roof, and “Unsound System” was written and recorded using this same eco-friendly energy.
Drawing their influences from ‘70s reggae, Public Enemy's Bomb Squad and the golden era of hip-hop in the early 1990s, the Combat Wombat crew delves into issues of national identity, the government’s treatment of refugees, indigenous sovereignty, US military force and uranium mining. They’ve travelled and toured Australia constantly, lending their expertise to a wide range of causes: working with traditional owners in the Western Desert to oppose uranium mining on Aboriginal land; providing sound systems for ‘Reclaim the Streets’ parties and blockades across the country; running workshops in isolated desert communities in Central Australia; assisting with the setup of the Warumpi Studio in Papunya, Central Australia; and showing farmers how to convert their vehicles to vegetable oil.
Combat Wombat have performed alongside Anticon, The Herd and Curse ov Dialect and at venues right across Australia – from shacks in the outback desert to inner city venues. Now you can see them doing what they do best, live at Footscray Community Arts Centre supported by local outfit Low Def.
MPC/turntablist duo Low Def have been honing their skills as both a mash-up style live act and production team for some years now. Daltron (AKA Connor Dalton - live samples on MPC4000) and DJ Crinklez (AKA Ryan Schubert - turntables) cut their teeth at the infamous city hangout, St Jerome's in Melbourne, and their short but sweet career boasts a range of quality gig opportunities including Push Over 2005, St Jerome's Laneway Festival (Melbourne and Sydney), Mooney Valley Festival, Scribble Jam Qualifier in Melbourne, as well as scoring supports for the likes of Apostles (USA), Bliss ‘n’ Eso, Dexter, Downsyde, Lotek (UK), Milk Bar Stars, and Ugly Duckling (USA). Low Def have toured to Adelaide, Sydney, Katoomba, Canberra and played at Sound Summit 2006 in Newcastle.
Armed with some new gadgetry this dynamic duo is working on their new mixtape and is set to blow Footscray audiences away with their unique live style and sound.
