Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne
Footscray Community Arts Centre's Crowd Theory project has been a huge success in the past with previous photo shoots taking place at Footscray Community Arts Centre, Braybrook, Footscray Station and Southbank. On Saturday 2 August this four-photo series is set to get a new addition - Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne.
Under the direction of artist Simon Terrill, Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne aims to create a large-scale photographic artwork that explores the historic, economic and romantic symbolism of the Port of Melbourne and captures community responses and connections to it.
If you're interested in becoming involved contact us by calling (03) 9362 8888 or visit the Crowd Theory website and become a part of this epic event.
In 2004, Footscray Community Arts Centre's CEO/Artistic Director Jerril Rechter and Simon Terrill came together to discuss ideas for an artistic project involving communities closely connected to Footscray Community Arts Centre and Melbourne's West. They wanted to create a work which was not only about these communities, but which was also a spontaneous creation by the communities themselves. The result was Footscray 2004 and Braybrook 2004, two large-format photographs that have been exhibited around Australia and overseas. Crowd Theory Footscray Station 2006 then followed, and Crowd Theory Southbank 2007 moved the project beyond the West to inner city Melbourne.
Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne intends to create a never-before-seen view of Melbourne's city port, acknowledging its rich and varied history and the many people involved in making it what it is today. The Port of Melbourne embodies many identities and this Crowd Theory event aims to extract something of the human dimension within this land of giant machines and container traffic.
Crowd Theory is concerned with how we imagine and inhabit the idea of community and as part of any Crowd Theory event, Simon Terrill undertakes extensive consultation and discussion to create an event and a photo that reflect the attitudes of the community to the area where the event is staged. For Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne this involves the participation of port workers and others who go to make up what may be described as the community of the Port.
We would like to invite anyone who lives or works near and has a strong connection to Melbourne's city port to become involved in the unique Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne event on Saturday 2 August. All you need to do is fill out an expression of interest form here explaining your connection to the Port of Melbourne.
Crowd Theory Port of Melbourne is produced by Footscray Community Arts Centre in partnership with the Port of Melbourne Corporation.
