Case Studies – Space/Knowledge

Artists In Residence

This case study is an example of Footscray Community Arts Centre as a Space and the program outcome the gaining of Knowledge.

First established in 2005, Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Artists In Residence (AIR) program attracts outstanding artists to the organisation to further their practice in developing art with communities. As well as having opportunities to work on their individual practice, all AIR are linked into Footscray Arts’ artistic projects and associated communities, thus providing these artists with valuable exposure to working on major community-based art projects.

High quality artistic activity requires high quality artists. To this end, Footscray Arts’ AIRs are outstanding practitioners in their fields. Previous AIRs include prominent media artist Emile Zile, filmmaker and award winning community-based arts practitioner Tamsin Sharp, and renowned sound artist Casey Rice. Resident Artists in 2008 included Candy Bowers, from ground-breaking hip-hop comedy duo Sista She, video artist Lindsay Cox and award-winning author and playwright Hoa Pham.

In embedding such artists in community contexts, Footscray Arts is also advancing and continually revitalising the arts and cultural development sector. Footscray Arts’ AIRs bring their talents, fresh models of collaboration and artistic standing to the organisation. In turn, Footscray Arts provides a physical space in which these artists can work, as well as the artistic contexts, resources and networks that come with the Centre’s standing as an iconic arts organisation. This reflects the value of Footscray Community Arts Centre as a SPACE for artists to create, experiment and collaborate, thus acquiring new forms of KNOWLEDGE to benefit their ongoing artistic practice.
