At the age of three, Jamila migrated from Morocco to The Netherlands. She studied Communication and Culture with a specialisation in Dutch linguistics at the University of Rotterdam and started working as a Communications Manager for the Feyenoord City Council in community engagement projects concerning safety, culture and health.
She then went on to work for the Rotterdamse Schouwburg (Rotterdam Municipal Theatre) as the Communication, Marketing and Education Manager. In 1998, Jamila formed multicultural theatre group Vijf op je ogen (Five on your Eyes) with three other young Muslim women. Under the direction of Adelheid Roossen, a leading Dutch writer/actor/director the group discussed intercultural relationships, migration and racial issues in their work. Vijf op je ogen toured for two years, visiting community arts centres, women’s centres and theatres.
Jamila has served two terms on the board of Passionate, a leading Dutch literary organisation who develop activities and projects for youth. In 2004 Jamila migrated to Melbourne, Australia to join her Australian-born partner and started working for Deaf Children Australia. She then moved on to Melbourne International Arts Festival in the position of Audience Development Coordinator, and then Gasworks Arts Park, where she was responsible for marketing Art of Difference, Australia’s leading deaf and disability arts festival. Jamila continues to work part time for Gasworks Arts Park,
Jamila joined Footscray Community Arts Centre in June 2009 as Marketing & Communications Manager
